2026-27 Service Changes

Starting in August, and as part of the 2026-27 budget approved by the Board of Trustees, we will be implementing adjustments to our transportation services. We know these adjustments will require our families to modify morning and afternoon routines, and we recognize the stress and anxiety this causes. 

To help you navigate these transitions, we have compiled a comprehensive Austin ISD Transportation: 2026-27 Service Changes FAQ to answer your questions regarding:

• Campus-specific reductions

• The transition to a localized "hub stop" model for secondary students

• The return to the state-standard 2-mile distance eligibility

• Transportation-funded late activity buses will be discontinued. However, individual schools retain the option to request and secure after-school bus services using their own campus funds. 

2026-27 Late Activity Bus Request

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, all after school late activity buses will be discontinued. However, in order to continue supporting our students, schools may submit a request to the transportation department with their own fund number per the eligibility criteria below:

1. Elementary students reside two or more miles from their school.
2. Middle school students reside three or more miles from their school.
3. High school students reside four or more miles from their school.

Please contact our transportation schedulers (Kelly Kahoe, Penny Rivera, Lisa Curwick) for access to the Google Form used to request late activity buses.

2026-27 Bus Information for Eligible Students

• We recommend families whose students are eligible for General Education transportation to check their bus information by checking the district’s “Bus Stop Finder''. The system will be live on our website effective Monday, August 3rd.
• Families whose students have special needs will receive their information in person from their bus teams. Please keep in mind routes and stops may change periodically, so visit the website for the latest route/stops information.
• The only thing we ask of our families and schools is to update students' contact information in the district’s Student Information System (SIS). Transportation does not update or edit any student information. This step is very important so student information is accurate during the nightly import into our scheduling system.

“Where's The Bus” App for Families

• Austin ISD’s transportation team offers families the "Where's The Bus” app, which provides timely information about the location of their student’s assigned bus, including when it will arrive at their stop.
• The free app is available on any device with internet access (smartphone, tablet, personal computer, iPad)—and takes less than five minutes to install.  Please promote the app in your school communities. Instructions are available at https://www.austinisd.org/transportation.

Updates About Delays and Changes to Bus Routes

Sometimes bus routes and pick-up and drop-off times may be changed or delayed due to weather, traffic, road closures or other circumstances. AISD monitors more than 370 bus routes every day, adjusting routes and adding buses as needed.

Parents interested in specific AISD bus route information may call AISD’s Transportation Department

between 7:45a.m and 4:45p.m Monday through Friday at 512-414-0238.

Families also may call dispatchers at AISD's bus terminals for information about the routes for their respective schools after 4:30am. Monday through Friday:

• Nelson Bus Terminal in Northeast Austin: 512-414-6520.

• Saegert Bus Terminal in Southwest Austin: 512-414-6500

• Southeast Bus Terminal: 512-414-8510.

Passing our School Buses on the road

As of February 8 2016, any driver recorded by our onboard cameras passing an AISD school bus with its stop sign out and lights flashing will receive a $300 citation in the mail. Please put the safety of our kids first and stop when you see the sign.
