August 24, 2009: Gorzycki Middle School opened for the first day of classes for the 2009-2010 school year. The school opened with more than 800 students in grades 6, 7 and 8. After more than a year of construction, the 169,000 square foot campus located on 42 acres along West Slaughter Lane in far southwest Austin, was ready for instruction.
April 2009: School colors and mascot voted on by incoming students:
School Colors: Burnt Orange and Black
School Mascot: Tigers
March 2009: School named for Diane M. Gorzycki who died in September 2008, at the age of 54. Gorzycki worked with the AISD for 30 years as a band director and music teacher. Ms. Gorzycki was in attendance at the May 2008 groundbreaking ceremony.
September 2008: Vickie Bauerle named principal.
May 29, 2008: Groundbreaking Ceremony kicked off construction of the new middle school.
September 2004: To help alleviate overcrowding and address the needs of our growing community, a total of nine new schools and a district-wide performing arts center were included in the 2004 and 2008 Bond Programs.
