In celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we honor the U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth’s. Her journey has taken her from the battlefields of Iraq to the halls of the U.S. Senate. Senator Duckworth was the first Thai American Woman elected to the U.S. Congress, the First Woman with a Disability and first female double amputee elected to the U.S. Senate, First Senator to Give Birth while in office, leading to a historic rule change that allowed infants on the Senate floor for voting, and the Second Asian American Woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate. She was awarded the Purple Heart after the Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and went down in 2004. Senator Duckworth continues to use her platform to advocate for the Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander community.
