For Jewish American Heritage Month, we are honoring Olga Bernstein Kohlberg - the mother of Texas kindergartens. After moving to El Paso in 1884, she became a force for positive change. Ms. Kohlberg is best known for helping to establish the first free public kindergarten in Texas in 1893, believing that every child deserves a strong start in their education. She also led the effort to open El Paso’s first public hospital and founded the city's public library. Guided by the Jewish tradition of community service, Ms. Kohlberg and her husband were founding members of Temple Mount Sinai. Today, her legacy lives on through the schools and libraries that continue to serve students across our state.
