As we continue celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honoring scientist Dr. Mario Molina. As a kid growing up in Mexico, Mario was so fascinated by science that he transformed a spare bathroom into his own personal chemistry lab. That curiosity led him to become a brilliant researcher. In 1974, he made an alarming discovery: human-made chemicals used in everyday items like spray cans and refrigerators were floating into the sky and burning a hole in the Earth’s ozone layer. Thanks to his persistence, Dr. Molina didn’t just stay in the lab. He spoke out and helped convince nations around the world to ban those harmful chemicals, successfully saving our atmosphere. In 1995, he became the first Mexican-born scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.  Dr. Molina showed us that science has the power to protect our entire planet.
