Dr. Gonzalo Garza is our National Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight today.  Many of you may be taking or hoping to take a class from Garza Online.  It is named for Dr. Garza, who served as an Austin ISD associate superintendent for 11 years.  He grew up in a migrant farm working family during the Great Depression and had to move constantly.  Dr. Garza attended 11 different schools through 9th grade.  In 9th grade, he dropped out to help support his family and later enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17, serving in both World War II and the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. While serving in the military, he realized how much he valued learning and vowed to dedicate his life to education. After returning home, he went back to school, earned his GED, and eventually earned a Doctorate in Education. Dr. Garza became a groundbreaking teacher and superintendent in Texas, dedicating his career to helping students who were at risk of dropping out. He loved visiting schools, asking students about their life goals, and reminding them that no obstacle is too big to overcome. Let Dr. Garza’s journey inspire you today to never give up on your education or your dreams.
