Today for Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honoring a local education champion and namesake of another Austin ISD middle school ,Consuelo Herrera Mendez. Consuelo Mendez made history in 1927 when she became the first Latina teacher hired by the Austin Independent School District in Texas. At a time when Hispanic students faced severe discrimination and were kept in segregated classrooms, she dedicated nearly 50 years of her life to teaching. She was a tireless advocate for Mexican-American rights, proving that every student deserves a quality education. Mendez was also a pioneer in community communication—she became the first person to translate school PTA newsletters into Spanish so that parents could stay involved in their children's education. Today, her lasting legacy lives on through Mendez Middle School in South Austin, which was proudly named in her honor.
