In recognition of African-American Heritage Month, today we highlight Alvin Ailey. Born in 1931 during the Great Depression, Alvin grew up in the segregated South. He didn’t just see the world around him; he felt it in the music of his church and the rhythms of his community. When he was 27, he founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to give Black dancers a stage to tell their own stories—something that was very rare at the time. Alvin is most famous for his masterpiece called 'Revelations'. It’s a powerful dance that uses spirituals and gospel music to show the journey from sorrow to joy. It has been seen by more people than any other modern dance in history, and it is still performed all over the world today.
