For African-American Heritage Month, we honor Bill Russell, a legendary athlete and activist who proved that being a champion means more than just winning games. Before he was a pro, Bill Russell struggled so much with basketball that he was almost cut from his high school team. He didn't give up, eventually becoming the most successful winner in American sports history. He won 11 titles in just 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics.  Russell changed basketball by focusing on defense and shot-blocking, which wasn't a common strategy at the time.  In 1966, he became the first Black head coach in the history of major U.S. professional sports. While dominating the NBA, Russell faced intense racism and threats, yet he never stopped fighting for equality. He used his fame to stand up for what was right: He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and attended the 1963 March on Washington.  Bill Russell’s impact was so great that the NBA recently made a historic decision: his No. 6 jersey is retired league-wide, meaning no player on any team will ever wear it again.
