Today, we celebrate the “Queen of Tejano” - Selena Quintanilla-Perez. She started singing when she was 9 years old, and had to learn Spanish to sing the Tejano music she became famous for. She was just 15 years old when she won female entertainer of the year at the Tejano Music Awards. She won a Grammy in 1994 for best Mexican-American album, becoming the first female Tejano singer to win a Grammy in that category. She made two more albums after that win, and was nominated for another Grammy,. Tragically, Selena was shot & killed in the prime of her life. Her last album, with English and Tejano songs was released after her death, and her legacy continued with movies about her life and compilation albums in following years.
