This Women’s History Month, we honor Wilma Rudolph, the "fastest woman in the world" who turned childhood illness into Olympic history. After surviving polio and being told she would never walk, Wilma shed her leg braces by age 11 and became a high school basketball and track star. In 1960, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. She used her fame to demand that her 1960 homecoming parade in Clarksville, Tennessee, be integrated—making it the first racially integrated municipal event in the city’s history. After retiring at 22, she founded the Wilma Rudolph Foundation to support underprivileged youth through sports and education.
