This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating Ann Richards (1933–2006), the trailblazing 45th Governor of Texas and a former middle school teacher! In 1990, she became the first woman elected Governor of Texas in her own right. She transformed the government by appointing more women, people of color, and individuals with disabilities to leadership roles than ever before. Known for her legendary sense of humor, she famously reminded the world that women often have to work twice as hard to get the same credit. Her legacy lives on through the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin, which prepares girls to become the next generation of CEOs and scientists.
