As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, today we recognize a woman who uses the power of words to build bridges between cultures: Naomi Shihab Nye. Born to a Palestinian father and an American mother, Naomi calls herself a 'wandering poet'. She grew up in Missouri, Jerusalem, and San Antonio, and she uses these different homes to write about our shared humanity. You might know her best for her award-winning novels like Habibi or The Turtle of Oman, or her poetry collection 19 Varieties of Gazelle, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. From 2019 to 2022, she even served as the Young People’s Poet Laureate, a title given to a poet who helps kids and teens find their own voices.
