For Women’s History Month, we are honoring a local legend whose legacy is felt right here in Southwest Austin: Nan Clayton. Ms. Clayton was a tireless advocate for Austin students for over 50 years. She served 14 years on the Austin ISD School Board and was only the second woman in history to serve as its president. Ms. Clayton was a driving force in bringing full-day kindergarten to Austin and was a courageous voice for fairness during the district's desegregation era. Fun fact: Clayton was a chemist and the first woman to descend into Inner Space Caverns in Georgetown!
