s we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, today we recognize educator Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez. Escalante was born in La Paz, Bolivia to parents who were both teachers. He taught math and physics for 12 years in Bolivia before immigrating to California. After emigrating to California, Escalante learned English and took a job teaching mathematics at Garfield High School where he helped students prepare for the Advanced Placement Test in calculus. Over four years there, he increased the number of students taking the test from 1 to 18, with seven of them scoring the highest score possible. Escalante believed that a teacher just needed to know their content, motivate the content to the student, and connect with the students.
