Today for Hispanic Heritage Month, we are honoring Jovita Idár, a brave journalist and civil rights activist born in Texas in 1885.Idár dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of Mexican Americans and women. She wrote for the newspaper La Crónica, using her voice to speak out against racism and injustice. She is famously remembered for her courage. When the Texas Rangers came to shut down her newspaper, she literally stood in the doorway and blocked them, protecting her right to free speech. She also created one of the first civil rights organizations for Mexican American women. Let's remember Jovita Idár’s courage today, and remember that our voices have power.
Good morning, Tigers! Today is September 17th, Constitution Day. On this date in 1787, 39 delegates signed the United States Constitution in Philadelphia, creating the foundation of our government and protecting our fundamental freedoms. The Constitution starts with three powerful words: 'We the People'—a reminder that our democracy belongs to all of us. As you go through your classes today, take a moment to reflect on the rights and freedoms you enjoy every day. Happy Constitution Day!
